The annual Pinewood Derby has been a great tradition for the Royal Rangers here at Grand Rapids First for many years. The race is open to Ranger boys, as well as the Mpact girls, siblings, parents and grandparents, which really makes it a family affair.
The racers have been working hard on their derby cars for the last few weeks, highly anticipating the race day. The race day begins at check-in, with registering and making sure the cars are the appropriate weight and proportions, as well as brushing on a little Pledge to help the cars run fast and smooth.
The cafeteria was open for derby-themed lunch and snacks. The “Pit Stop” menu included Derby Dogs, Axle Rod Fries and even Axle Grease – aka coffee.
Races, which are categorized by age and gender, take place two or four cars at a time per track. Trophies are awarded to the racers who win the most races per group, and there are prizes for the most creative car designs. If by chance, a racer does not win any races, he or she was invited to a special pizza party after the event.
What a fun day for all the racers and families! Congrats to all our winners and a big thank you to all the teachers and volunteers who helped set up this event. We are already looking forward to next year’s race!
